GGP Systems has supplied market leading software to Cable & Wireless as part of project to design communication networks and prepare client feasibility and cost studies. Cable & Wireless, one of the world's leading international communications companies, is using GGP MasterMap® Loader to convert original map data received from the Ordnance Survey (OS) into a format compatible with their existing IT infrastructure saving the company significant time and resources.
The UK business of Cable & Wireless provides enterprise and carrier solutions to the largest users of telecoms services across the UK, US, continental Europe and Asia together with wholesale broadband services in the UK. Using OS MasterMap, described as a digital representation of the real world containing over 450 million unique features in five layers and updated daily, an in-house application delivers a service network design, complete with cost and feasibility studies, based on a specific geographic location.
GGP MasterMap Loader was originally used by Cable & Wireless to convert and load their initial supply of data from the compressed GML format as supplied by the OS to SQL Server 2005 format. The processed data is stored on an external hard drive attached via USB to the company's development server. Having loaded the baseline MasterMap Address and Topography layers Cable & Wireless now receive quarterly updates from the OS.
"GGP MasterMap loader was recommended by the Ordnance Survey," said Simon Williams, Database Analyst at Cable & Wireless. "It is one of the few solutions on the market that support SQL Server and has saved us significant amounts of time and energy."
GGP MasterMap Loader also supports Oracle, PostgreSQL and SQLite and is OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium, IncTM) compliant so the processed data can be used in all the leading GIS. The software manages MasterMap Layers and unlike traditional tools the GGP software enables users to store changes made to the data. This ensures accuracy, currency and providing an audit trail allowing crucial historical queries to be performed. Users can also perform spatial and address lookup queries on data loaded via the MasterMap Loader.
GGP also provides additional tools and functionality to support users of OS MasterMap. The latest release of GGP's GIS offers customised display options, including Land-Line® simulation and monochrome and greyscale display, together with an improved image loader that supports the MasterMap Imagery layer and GeoTIFF file format.
